One turbo good, two turbos better? That's the philosophy Audi has adopted with its latest A6 3.0 BiTDI model. Andy Enright reports.
With a massively powerful 309bhp twin-turbocharged diesel engine capable of getting this all-wheel drive Audi to 60mph in under five seconds, it's perhaps surprising that with a more measured right boot you can see nearly 45mpg from the A6 3.0 BiTDI. It's a very special car.
Audi is not a company that is comfortable in second place, yet for eight long years that's just where it has sat in the executive car sector with its pokiest diesel A6. The problem has been easy to identify. BMW's 535d offered the sort of performance that the top TDI A6 just couldn't answer. The Ingolstadt company could claim superiority in a number of different areas across its range but here was a clear anomaly. As a result, for years now, BMW has been mopping up sales from Executive sector drivers who wanted serious performance as well as decent economy, low emissions and a huge range.
The answer has finally arrived in the subtle shape of the A6 3.0 BiTDI. Perhaps realising that BMW was onto something, Audi has also gone for two turbochargers to swell power up to a heady 309bhp, exactly the same as, er, a 535d. The power vacuum has at last been filled.

A power output of 309bhp driving all four wheels was always going to result in a decidedly brisk sprint to 60mph and so it proves. The A6 3.0 BiTDI rockets through the benchmark sprint in just 4.9 seconds and keeps going to an electronically limited 155mph top speed. A humungous 650Nm of torque is available between 1,450 and 2,800rpm. Think about an overtaking manoeuvre and this car can manage it.
Audi has been developing some very interesting driver's cars in recent years and that focus is clearly apparent in this A6. An actuator has been fitted to the exhaust system, which is effectively a speaker that imposes a defined oscillation pattern on the exhaust flow and transforms the typical gravelly diesel exhaust note into a more tuneful sound that's closer to the output of a high-performance petrol engine.
Power is transmitted via an eight-speed tiptronic transmission to a self-locking centre differential with torque vectoring for optimum traction and stability. A sport differential which distributes power in continuously variable proportions between the rear wheels is available from the options list to offer even better drive out of corners.

Engine aside, the recipe is of course pure A6, by which we mean the latest generation version launched here in the Spring of 2011. This BiTDI unit comes with both saloon and Avant models, cars which have been usefully improved in latest generation form. If you have tried a post-2011 A6, you'll find it few millimetres broader in the beam than before, this car being both shorter and lower than its predecessor. The wheels have been teased further out towards each corner of the design, giving a marked improvement in both front and rear leg room. Use of aluminium has cut the body and chassis weight by 15 per cent, with 80kg being shaved off the final product. This is helpful as despite being a compact unit at just 44cm long, the diesel engine we're looking at here is no lightweight.
You'll look in vain for any BiTDI badging on the exterior of this A6, so in that regard at least this is something of a Q-car. It's a very assured piece of styling although not one that will provoke too much reaction. The interior follows a similar theme and will be familiar if you've already given any of Audi's larger models - say an A7 Sportback or an A8 - the once over. A wraparound dash with low key but high quality detailing follows Audi's latest design theme and there are some beautifully finished wood trims. If you're of the mind that wood finishes have no place in a German car, the A6 might well convince you otherwise.

This powerhouse BiTDI engine is offered in conjunction with two trim levels. The 'mainstream' trim, SE, is geared towards comfort and usually gets the cold shoulder by most Audi buyers who prefer the rather more thrusting S Line version. Prices start at just under £44,000 for the SE with the S Line tacking around £2,300 onto the cost of the entry-level car. There's also an Avant estate model offered for those who need more luggage space. Stand-out features common to all models include satellite navigation linked to a 6.5-inch retractable colour monitor, Milano leather upholstery, the Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system controlling throttle response, transmission shift points and steering feel, the Audi parking system plus, light and rain sensors, cruise control and keyless go push-button engine ignition.
Online services including news and weather information supplied by Google are accessible if the 'Mobile Telephone Preparation High' option is specified. This package enables drivers to plot detailed routes on a home computer and download them to the navigation system when they start a trip. Google Earth images will also appear on the A6's dash display. The list of optional driver aids also includes a night vision assistant employing a thermal imaging camera to highlight 'warm-blooded' road users in front of the car. There's also a head-up display projecting key information onto the windscreen so that it appears to float about 2.5 metres ahead and a park assist system which automatically takes care of the steering function for the driver when manoeuvring into parallel or perpendicular parking spaces.
Other options include comfort seats with heating, cooling and massaging functions, acoustic glazing, supple leather trimming for the centre console, a 15-speaker 1200-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system and a TV receiver. The sheer amount of technology built into the car and available as options is quite dizzying and steals the lead from Mercedes-Benz in this sector.

The buying justification is rather different for these high power diesels than it is for the entry-level 2.0-litre models. Yes, buyers do like to keep a cap on fuel consumption and emissions-based taxation but it's not the overriding concern. Customers often buy these models because they like the feel of the rippling torque and they also value the fact that the car has a huge mileage range.
Residual values should hold up well if the rest of the A6 range is anything to go by and day to day running costs will be reasonable, helping drive down the overall pence per mile running figure. Efficiency measures include start-stop and recuperation systems and an innovative thermal management set-up that quickly brings the coolant and oil up to their operating temperatures. With their help, combined economy in A6 is rated at 44.1mpg, while emissions are pegged at 169g/km.

It's long overdue but the Audi A6 3.0-litre BiTDI will, for many, be well worth the wait. There's an imperious feel to any big diesel executive car and the A6 is sure to be popular with those who cover big mileages and need to get from A to B quickly and discreetly. What's interesting about this car is the fact that Audi isn't marketing it as a road-burning sports flagship. Instead, it's being sold in a manner as low-key as its personality.
The A6 is a car that, in standard guise, feels like an accomplished mile muncher but not a naturally extrovert entertainer. Thing is, a delve into the Audi options list can sharpen one up quite markedly. Go for adaptive damping, sport steering and a sport rear differential and you get a car that's a lot closer to a BMW in terms of driving dynamics. Whichever tack you take, the idea of an executive express that can seat five people in luxury, smash its way to 60mph in less than five seconds and still return a fuel economy figure of 44.8mpg is utterly beguiling.
