The proven reliability of the unique RENESIS engine, which powers the Mazda RX-8 was confirmed by setting no less than 40 FIA International Endurance records during a 24-hour period. This completely revolutionary rotary engine operates without cylinders, and with moving parts limited to just three components compared with the 40 moving parts in a standard piston engine, with the result that the delivery of power is incredibly smooth and refined. It’s no wonder then that the prototype of these incredible engines, the exceptional 192ps (141Kw) with 5-speed transmission, and the unique 231ps (170kW), coupled to a 6-speed transmission, won the International Engine of the Year award for two consecutive years.
Because the Mazda RX-8’s engines are lighter and smaller than conventional piston engines, and, combined with the inclusion of a long wheelbase, there is an impressive power-to-weight ratio which gives nearly perfect 50/50 weight distribution for extraordinary agility and ability. Power is therefore directed in a smooth and progressive flow, as would be expected from the pure performance of 100% sports car.
Pinpoint electric power steering, with just 2.9 turns lock-to-lock, and the inclusion of Dynamic Stability Control technology and a limited slip differential ensures the maintenance of regulated traction even during rapid acceleration. Low-based, with flared wheel arches framing the sleek elegant bonnet, and 18" 5-spoke allow wheels, the Mazda RX-8 has an overall look of powerful assertiveness, of purpose and confidence in its own unique design.
And this detail of assiduous specialised design, aimed at giving strength to the Mazda RX-8, extends to the freestyle door system, providing surprisingly easy access to the spacious interior. The front and rear doors open from the centre, blending 2-door styling with 4-door flexibility, whilst maintaining the highest safety standards. The body strength of the vehicle is enhanced considerably by extensive reinforcement of the rear doors to create an integrated B-pillar when the doors are fully closed. And for further stability, a V-shaped diagonal brace is attached to the top mounting of each rear suspension damper giving additional rigid support at the rear of the body.
With optional mica paint and upholstered beautifully in soft black leather or cloth trim, the interior of the Mazda RX-8 is surprisingly spacious, with adequate room for three adult passengers. Adjustable driving positions are offered by the low-slung front sports seats, with deep supportive side bolsters, and all essential controls are ergonomically arranged for intuitive operation.
